Polish travel retail operator Baltona has officially launched a new 504 sqm duty free store at John Paul II International Airport Kraków–Balice, strengthening its retail presence at one of Central Europe’s fastest-growing airports.
The newly opened “Kraków Duty Free by Baltona” store has been designed with a modern walk-through retail concept aimed at improving passenger engagement and overall shopping experience. The outlet combines international duty-free brands with regional and locally inspired elements representing the culture and heritage of Kraków.
According to industry reports, the store incorporates several modern retail technologies including electronic shelf labels, self-checkout systems, LED digital displays, and improved passenger navigation layouts. The development reflects the growing shift in global airport retail toward digitally enabled and experience-driven shopping environments.
The new retail space forms part of Baltona’s broader strategy to modernize airport retail operations and enhance commercial performance through passenger-centric store concepts. The company has also reportedly integrated “Sense of Place” design elements inspired by Kraków’s cultural identity, allowing travelers to experience a localized shopping atmosphere within the airport environment.

Industry observers note that airports are increasingly investing in commercial infrastructure as global passenger traffic continues to recover and grow. Modern travel retail environments are now focusing on creating seamless and technology-driven shopping experiences through frictionless retail operations, digital integration, data-driven merchandising strategies, optimized passenger flow, and personalized customer engagement.
Kraków Airport has witnessed steady passenger growth in recent years, making it an increasingly important regional aviation hub in Europe. The latest retail expansion highlights how airports are positioning travel retail not only as a revenue source but also as a key component of overall passenger experience.
