Ian Macleod Distillers has partnered exclusively with Avolta to mark one of Scotland’s most significant aviation milestones — Glasgow Airport’s 60th anniversary — with a whisky designed to celebrate the deep, decades-long relationship between the hub and the city it serves. The result is the Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Single Cask #1789, a collectible release limited to just 248 bottles and available exclusively through World Duty Free at Glasgow Airport. The launch has been timed to coincide with The Whisky Collective, Avolta’s annual global whisky festival held across its World Duty Free stores — placing the release at the centre of one of the travel retail spirits calendar’s most closely watched events.
Bottled at 59% ABV, presented in its natural colour and un-chill-filtered, the whisky has been matured in a 12 Year Old first-fill bourbon barrel — a cask selection chosen specifically to showcase Glengoyne’s house style at full strength and without compromise. At an RRP of £119 (US$158) for a 70cl bottle, the release sits firmly within the collector category: a price point that signals genuine rarity rather than mass-market accessibility, reinforcing its status as what Ian Macleod Distillers itself describes as “an exclusive experience for the lucky few.”
A Label That Tells Glasgow’s Story
Rather than relying on standard Glengoyne packaging, the distillers commissioned a bespoke Glasgow skyline-themed label specifically for this anniversary release — a visual celebration of the city the airport has served for six decades. The artwork features three of Glasgow’s most recognisable landmarks: the Duke of Wellington statue on Royal Exchange Square (famously and perpetually adorned with a traffic cone), the distinctive curved silhouette of The Armadillo (the SEC Armadillo concert venue on the banks of the Clyde), and an illustration of Glengoyne Distillery itself — situated just 15 miles north of Glasgow in the village of Dumgoyne.
That geographic proximity is central to the story Ian Macleod Distillers is telling. Few whisky brands can claim quite such an intimate connection to a major Scottish city as Glengoyne can to Glasgow — close enough to be considered the metropolitan area’s “local” Highland malt, yet far enough into the countryside to maintain its rural distilling heritage entirely intact.

William Ovens, Head of Global Travel Retail, Ian Macleod DistillersGlengoyne: Scotland’s Most-Visited Highland Distillery
Founded in 1833, Glengoyne has built its reputation on a distinctly patient approach to whisky-making — combining some of the slowest stills in Scotland with unpeated barley to produce a signature, fruity new make spirit. As the southernmost distillery in the Highlands, Glengoyne occupies a uniquely accessible position for visitors, and the distillery has translated that accessibility into genuine commercial success: it ranks among Scotland’s three most-visited whisky destinations and was recently placed in the top 10% of attractions worldwide on TripAdvisor.
The brand’s name derives from the Gaelic Glenguin, meaning “Glen of the Wild Geese” — a fitting heritage touch for a distillery that has spent nearly two centuries cultivating a reputation built on craft, patience and a strong sense of place. That sense of place is precisely what makes this anniversary release significant: rather than producing a generic celebratory bottling, Ian Macleod Distillers has used the opportunity to tell a specific, geographically rooted story about Glengoyne’s relationship with the city its home airport has served for six decades.
The Whisky Collective: Avolta’s Global Whisky Showcase
The timing of the Single Cask #1789 release is deliberate. The Whisky Collective is Avolta’s annual global whisky festival, staged across its World Duty Free stores and designed to showcase rare and travel retail-exclusive single malts to passengers passing through its airport network. By anchoring the Glengoyne anniversary release to this festival, Avolta and Ian Macleod Distillers ensure the whisky reaches precisely the audience most likely to appreciate its rarity: engaged whisky travellers actively seeking out limited releases during their journey.
