Bacardi Limited, the world’s largest privately held international spirits company, has announced a significant reshaping of its regional leadership structure — promoting from within to fill some of the organisation’s most senior commercial roles, including the leadership of its Global Travel Retail (GTR) business. The changes expand Bacardi’s regional leadership line-up from three presidents to four, with each now reporting directly to CEO Mahesh Madhavan on the company’s Global Leadership Team.
At the centre of the reshuffle is Vijay Subramaniam, who has led Bacardi’s Asia, Middle East & Africa (AMEA) and Global Travel Retail business since 2018. Subramaniam moves to become Regional President, Europe — a newly carved-out role that separates European leadership from Latin America & Caribbean (LAC), which had been combined under a single executive for the past three years. For the travel retail spirits sector, the most consequential element of the announcement is who succeeds him.
Vinay Golikeri Returns to Lead AMEA and Global Travel Retail
Taking over Bacardi’s AMEA and Global Travel Retail business is Vinay Golikeri, who is promoted from his role as Managing Director, India and Southeast Asia. The appointment carries particular resonance for those following Bacardi’s GTR business closely: Golikeri previously served as Managing Director of Bacardi’s global travel retail division before moving to lead India and Southeast Asia in January 2023, meaning his new role is, in effect, a return to a channel and team he already knows intimately, now at a significantly elevated level of regional responsibility.
With more than two decades at Bacardi across commercial and marketing roles, Golikeri has spent the past three and a half years specifically focused on leading and growing top emerging markets — experience that Bacardi is clearly betting will translate effectively into the high-growth, premiumisation-driven dynamics that increasingly define global travel retail across Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

The Three Moves: Who Goes Where
The reshuffle touches three of Bacardi’s most senior regional executives, with each move connected to the next in a carefully sequenced succession chain.
“We’re proud to appoint exceptional talent from within our organisation into these critical roles. These leaders have consistently demonstrated deep expertise, a strong commitment to our values, and the ability to lead at scale. Their appointments reflect not only their individual accomplishments, but also our belief in growing leadership from within our own teams.”
Mahesh Madhavan, Chief Executive Officer, Bacardi LimitedWhy This Matters for Global Travel Retail
For an industry that watches GTR leadership changes closely, the appointment of Vinay Golikeri carries weight beyond a simple promotion. Golikeri previously served as Managing Director of Bacardi’s global travel retail business, where he was credited with helping the company navigate the pandemic-era disruption to airport and duty free channels before handing over leadership in January 2023 to focus on India and Southeast Asia. His return to the channel — now at the elevated combined AMEA & GTR level — gives Bacardi’s travel retail business a leader who already has direct, hands-on experience of the unique commercial dynamics of duty free and airport retail.
Subramaniam’s move to lead Europe also reflects a broader pattern across the spirits industry: rotating proven regional leaders into new geographies to apply lessons learned elsewhere. Having spent close to a decade building Bacardi’s AMEA and travel retail business from his Dubai base, Subramaniam now brings that experience of fast-growth emerging markets to a more mature, premiumisation-focused European business.
