Mortlach, Diageo’s Speyside single malt long celebrated by connoisseurs under the nickname “The Beast of Dufftown”, has made its most significant move in travel retail to date — unveiling the Travellers’ Exclusive Collection, a trio of age-statement expressions created exclusively for the global duty free channel. The launch marks a world first for the brand: never before has Mortlach produced a collection crafted specifically and solely for travel retail, making this a landmark moment for both the brand and the travel retail spirits category.
Developed under the stewardship of Mortlach Master Distiller Dr Craig Wilson and released by Diageo Global Travel, the collection comprises a 14 Year Old, a 16 Year Old, and a 20 Year Old — each with a distinct cask strategy and flavour philosophy. The collection will launch exclusively through China Duty Free Group (cdf) at Hong Kong International Airport in July 2026, before rolling out across major cdf locations including Hainan, Shanghai and Beijing, and ultimately expanding to global travel retail.
A Brand Built on the Unconventional: Mortlach’s Heritage
To understand the significance of this launch, one must first understand Mortlach. Founded in 1823 as the first legal distillery in the town of Dufftown in the heart of Speyside, Mortlach operates one of the most unusual and complex distillation processes in Scotch whisky. Its celebrated 2.81 times partial distillation method — unchanged since 1896 — passes spirit through a unique sequence of six stills in a partial and irregular cycle, resulting in a whisky of extraordinary weight, richness and intensity.
This unconventional process is what earned Mortlach its cult reputation as “The Beast of Dufftown” — a whisky that stands apart from the more delicate, floral character typical of Speyside, delivering instead a bold, meaty and profoundly complex spirit. It has long been a distillery sought out by serious whisky collectors, and this new collection is positioned squarely to serve that audience in the Asia Pacific travel retail market and beyond.
“We are excited to be bringing an exclusive Mortlach collection to travellers worldwide, so anyone can experience and immerse themselves in this exceptional malt whisky brand. We know differentiation matters and that people are looking for something they can’t get at home when they visit the duty-free fixture.”
Andrew Cowan, Managing Director, Diageo Global Travel“We are delighted to be the first to introduce Mortlach’s Travellers’ Exclusive Collection to travel retail consumers. Today’s travellers are looking for unique products and memorable discoveries that they can only find while travelling, and this collection delivers exactly that.”
Michelle Sun, Vice President of China Duty FreeThe Three Expressions: An Unconventional Cask Journey
Dr Craig Wilson has crafted each expression around a distinct cask philosophy that reflects Mortlach’s reputation for doing things differently. The collection deliberately moves away from convention, with the 20 Year Old marking a genuine world first.
